The mysterious Herman's Bolete.
Ecology: Spring, Sierra Nevada, conifer forests.
These species seem to be reported either as B. regius or B. appendiculatus, or is common to hear that both were collected on a single day. The motivation for naming seems to boil down to the cap color. While clearly being in Section Appendiculati, the precise name should certainly await further studies. It is interesting to see whether the species that grow in the Fall and /on on the Coast are the same...
